Privacy Policy

This policy explains how MOTAdvisor and the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) collect, use and protect your personal data when you use our vehicle information services.

Your privacy matters to us

This privacy policy applies to the MOTAdvisor website and all associated DVSA vehicle data services. It was last updated on 1 May 2025. We may update this policy from time to time; any changes will be published on this page.

MOTAdvisor is operated on behalf of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), an executive agency of the Department for Transport. DVSA is the data controller for personal information processed through this service.

1.What information we collect

We collect different types of information depending on how you use this service. This includes information you give us directly and information collected automatically when you visit the site.

Information you provide

When you use the MOT history checker or other vehicle lookup tools, you enter a vehicle registration number. This is not personal data — it is a vehicle identifier held in DVSA's public records. We do not ask you to create an account or provide your name, address or contact details to use the core check service.

If you contact us via our help or feedback forms, we may collect:

  • your name and email address
  • the content of your message or enquiry
  • any attachments you choose to include

Information collected automatically

When you visit MOTAdvisor, our servers and third-party analytics tools automatically collect certain technical information, including:

  • your IP address (anonymised where possible)
  • browser type and version
  • operating system
  • pages visited and time spent on each page
  • referring website or search query
  • date and time of your visit
info Vehicle registration numbers you search for may be logged for service monitoring and fraud prevention purposes. These logs are held securely and are not linked to your identity unless required for a legal investigation.

  • to detect and prevent fraudulent or abusive use of the service
  • to respond to enquiries and feedback submitted via our contact forms
  • to comply with legal obligations, including data retention requirements
  • to produce anonymised statistical reports on service usage

We do not use your data for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.

We do not use your data for direct marketing and we will never sell your personal data to third parties.

Technology and hosting providers

We use trusted third-party suppliers to host and operate this website. These suppliers act as data processors on our behalf and are bound by data processing agreements that restrict how they may use your data.

Analytics providers

We use anonymised analytics tools (such as Google Analytics with IP anonymisation enabled) to understand how the service is used. These providers may set cookies on your device — see the Cookies section below for details.

Law enforcement and legal proceedings

We may disclose information to law enforcement agencies, courts or regulators where we are legally required to do so, or where disclosure is necessary to prevent serious harm or criminal activity.

warning_amber We will never share your personal data with advertisers or data brokers, and we will never use vehicle search queries to build profiles for commercial purposes.

5.How long we keep your data

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. Our standard retention periods are:

  • server access logs (including IP addresses) – 90 days, then deleted or anonymised
  • contact form submissions and email correspondence – 2 years from the date of last contact
  • anonymised analytics data – up to 26 months, in line with Google Analytics default settings
